The WPS desk works to support the full implementation of the African Union (AU) Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol), the United Nations Security Council Resolution(UNSCR) 1325, and the follow-up resolution on Women Peace and Security in the context of Africa and beyond. It also works to promotes gender parity and inclusive participation of women in peace processes through capacity building of women at the grassroots, middle, and strategic levels, research, policy dialogues, gender advisory, and advocacy. Since its inception, the office has worked with various national, regional, continental, and international stakeholders to promote Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (GEWE) and the achievement of the WPS Agenda in Africa

The WPS Pillars
    1. Prevention: Prevention of conflict and all forms of violence against women and girls
    2. Participation: Increase women’s active participation and leadership roles in peacebuilding and security.
    3. Protection: promotion and protection of human rights of women and girls at all phases of conflict and in times of peace with emphasis on protection from Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
    4. Relief and Recovery: Focuses on ensuring that specific relief needs of women and girls are met and that special attention is paid to the most vulnerable, including displaced women and girls, survivors of gender-based violence, and those with disabilities among others.
    5. Documentations of women’s contribution to peace processes in Africa.
Key Activities

  • Advocacy for Women’s Participation: Advocating for women’s meaningful participation in peace negotiations and decision-making at all levels of governance.

    Training and Capacity Building: Programs that train women to engage in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, both at the grassroots and leadership levels.

    Research: Conducts research that highlights the essence of women in peace and security.

Achievements
  • Led the Barrier Assessment Research of the Ghana Armed Forces under the “Measuring opportunities for Women in Peacekeeping “(MOWIP) global research, in partnership with the Geneva Centre for Security Governance(DCAF) and the Cornel University with funding from the Canadian Government. MOWIP assesses the contribution and challenges of women in peacekeeping and how gender norms and practices within the Armed Forces influences women participation in peacekeeping.
  • Lead implementer for the “Enhancing Ghana Armed Forces Capabilities to Address Barriers to Women in Peacekeeping” project. The project provides technical assistance to the GAF and builds their institutional capacity to address challenges that hinder women deploying to UN peace operations as identified in the “MOWIP report”.
  • Supported in the development and acquisition of accreditation for the Master’s Degree Programme in Gender, Peace and Security (MGPS) and the Certificate course in Gender, Peace and Security(CGPS)
  • Established the KAIPTC Women Support Scheme to increase opportunities for capacity building for women working in peace and security sectors.
  • Supported the development and advocated for the implementation on Ghana’s first National Action Plan (NAP I) on UNSCR 1325 in 2012, and also Contributed to the development, validation and the lunching of the second National Action Plan (NAP II).
  • Built capacity of local actors in seven (7) countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, South Soudan, Central Africa Republic and Liberia) on preventing and responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Africa.
  • Collaborated with the Office of the Special Envoy on Women Peace and Security of the AU to develop a training manual on the Continental Results Framework, and build capacities of national actors to monitor and report on the WPS Agenda using the CRF.
  • Initiated the Gender Sensitive Election Observation Project in Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The Project aimed to promote greater participation by women in leadership governance and peace processes
  • Developed a comprehensive Gender Policy for the Ghana Police Service with support from Accountability Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program (ARAP). The policy seeks to integrate gender mainstreaming perspective into Police Administration, management, operations and culture to address Gender inequalities in the service
  • Organized a Training Workshop on Enhancing Grassroots and indigenous Women in Mediation and Decision-making Processes” for Queen-mothers in partnership with the Department for International Development (DFID) OF THE British High Commission in Ghana with funding from the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office under the Women Mediation across the Commonwealth (WMC) programme.
  • Organized a trainer of trainers on Building Women’s Capacity for Conflict Analysis and Prevention in West Africa and the Sahel’ in partnership with The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), ECOWAS and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP).
  • Collaborated with the Security Policy Dialogue Program (SIPODI) of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation to organize a regional conference on “Increasing Women’s Leadership Roles in West African Armies “. This brought together females officers from West African Armies to deliberate on challenges encountered by female personnel in the service.
  • Supported the FriedrichEbertStiftung Peace and Security Centre of Competence Sub-Saharan Africa Office in the development of a Regional Women’s Platform in Security Sector Reform and Governance.
